What is the
Rockbridge DSB?
The Rockbridge Area Disability Services Board (RDSB) is one of forty-one state Boards created by the Virginia Legislature. The Board is comprised of citizens with and without disabilities appointed by local jurisdictions and serving Buena Vista, Lexington, and Rockbridge County.
The mission of the DSB is to learn the needs of area residents who have physical and/or sensory disabilities, to raise public awareness, and to influence long-range state planning and investment. As catalysts for change, we intend to find solutions through cooperative efforts of concerned individuals, local agencies, local government, and area businesses.
What does the DSB do?
- Review local services for persons with physical and/or sensory disabilities.
- Identify unmet needs.
- Advise appropriate state and local agencies and governing bodies.
- Support individuals in their efforts to obtain needed services.
- Promote access to programs and facilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Provide information and referral about assistive technology - hearing aids, reading machines, wheelchairs, braces, etc.
- Promote improved accessible housing options with local government and area agencies - independent living, group home, assisted living.
- Provide funding support for a transportation system that provides safe and affordable rides for citizens with physical and/or sensory disabilities.
